Total procedures and interventions

Each episode has 12 procedure and intervention fields (four prior to 2002-03). The total procedures and interventions table provides an aggregate summary of codes from all the procedure and intervention fields including the main procedure and intervention.

The codes are presented at the 3-character level.

Procedure and interventions are recorded using OPCS-4. During 2006-07, the version of OPCS used to record procedures and interventions in HES changed from OPCS-4.2 to OPCS-4.3. Further revisions were made in 2007-08 and 2009-10 bringing us to version 4.5. All codes that were in OPCS-4.2 to 4.4 remain in OPCS-4.5 and new codes were added to reflect changing clinical practice.

Please note: The 2008-09 total procedures and interventions table was amended on 26/04/2025 to correct an error in the labelling of the final column. The 'Day Case' figures were incorrectly labelled as 'FCE bed days'.

Note (05/08/11): Figures for patient age for some patients at very high ages within the 75+ age group may not be fully accurate for two reasons. Firstly a coding problem excluded patients whose age was recorded as 109, 110, 111 or 119; secondly some systems which supply data have an automatic default date of birth of 1st January 1900 or 1st January 1901, which can result in inaccurate date of birth and age being provided, where this has not been entered. The impact of these issues is expected to be very small, except for analysis of these very high age groups.
