HES is a rich and detailed dataset and we publish a range of analyses from HES on this site. Unfortunately, given the huge number of combinations of fields within HES, it is only possible to publish a limited number of analyses. If you can't find the data that you need on this website, you may need to order HES data. There are three factors that categorise the services that we offer:
The regulations and prices vary with each combination of factors.
You have a number of options to choose from. These are described in more detail below. As you move down the table, the complexity, cost, and time to deliver increase. If you want data which might be identifiable against a particular person your request will be subject to additional governance safeguards which will incur additional time and cost. Click on the information type for more information, including how to order tailored reports.
Information type | How much will it cost? | Does it need governance approval? | How long will it take? |

Tailored summary tables | Extract and tabulation charges | No | >Five weeks |
Tailored summary tables including sensitive data | Yes | >Six weeks
Episode records | Yes | >Six weeks

The information in the table above is provided to help you to decide how to get the right data for your requirements. This guidance information is neither definitive, nor contractually binding.
A tabulation gives you the opportunity to design your own tailor-made table. It would usually present aggregate or average results from a query. This could be a single figure or a complex, multi-dimensional structure with many rows, columns and sub-divisions.
This service gives you tabulated data. Where the level of filtering or grouping means that small numbers would result (potentially making the dataset sensitive), these table cells are supplied to you unmasked. You will need to provide a justification as to why it is necessary for you to access small numbers and formal approval will be required. For details of the approval process, please see The approvals process.
This service gives you a record-level data extract that includes neither sensitive nor patient-identifiable fields. The fact that the extract is at a row level means that it might be considered to be sensitive and your application will need to be checked by us to determine whether or not you will need to provide a justification and seek formal approval. For details of the approval process, please see The approvals process.
This service gives you a record-level data extract that does include one or more sensitive fields but no patient identifiable fields. The inclusion of sensitive fields means that you will need to provide a justification and seek formal approval. For details of the approval process, please see The approvals process.
This type of extract contains patient identifiable, sensitive fields at record-level data for selected cases, showing selected information for each case. Your need to view patient identifiable data will need to be justified and formally approved. For details of the approval process, please see The approvals process.
