Tailored summary tables

Key features

The key features of this service are:

  • Each dataset is aggregated using fields that are neither sensitive nor personally identifiable.
  • Where the application of grouping and filtering results in cells with small numbers that could compromise anonymity or sensitivity, these will be masked. In these circumstances, the corresponding row and column sub-totals are also modified.
  • You do not have to justify why you need the tabulated dataset, nor what you intend to do with it. The application process is therefore quick and easy.
Example:

In the example above, where the numbers in cells are between 1 and 5 they are suppressed and replaced with an '*'. These numbers are suppressed because small numbers might permit the identification of individual patients. For example, if there was only one patient aged between 60 and 74 who had been treated at Derbyshire County PCT, then that individual would potentially be identifiable.

Disclosing potentially patient-identifiable data requires additional governance procedures to protect patient's confidentiality. If you need that level of information you will have to choose Tailored summary tables including sensitive data.

Approvals and costs

There is no formal approval process for tabulations; you will only need to sign up to the standard terms and conditions. Once signed off, the specification will be subject to change control.

We offer this service at a cost (we are not a profit-making organisation). Please see the Data Request Charges page for details.

Requesting tailored summary tables

To submit a request:

  • Complete the applicant details form. This tells us who you are and where to send the specification, tabulated data and invoice.
  • Decide what field selection you need (see 'Tabulation information' in related documents), what filters you want applied and how you want the data to be grouped. To learn more about the possibilities available to you, read Understanding the Data.
  • Decide what table layout you want (see 'Tabulation information' in related documents).
  • Complete one of the field selection forms.
  • If you have requested that the table includes fields from PROMs, you will additionally need to complete the PROMs data request form.
