Death and myocardial infarction or stroke

Paper and authors: Place, time and certified cause of death in people who die after hospital admission for myocardial infarction or stroke - Goldacre MJ, Roberts SE, Griffith M

This paper looks at whether deaths following hospital admissions for myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke occur during the admission episode or following discharge, and how the deaths are recorded.

The analysis uses linked hospital and mortality statistics to analyse the time, place and certified cause of death in 35- to 74-year-olds following admission for MI or stroke.

The researchers found that most deaths took place within 30 days of admission.
